Since I was a child I have been an avid swimmer, skier and dancer. After my first daughter was born by C-section I began a challenging strength training and weight lifting regimen, but after a couple years I realized that I wanted something less repetitive and more holistic. I felt there had to be a practice that was more soulful, life enhancing, intellectually stimulating, morally nurturing and spiritually fulfilling. It was Yoga that helped me define what was missing and as the Buddhist proverb says, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.”
My first experience was Iyengar Yoga in 1994 and my teacher, Chris Stein, taught me to appreciate the foundation and the extent of the art and science of the teachings of Sri BKS Iyengar. She encouraged me to study with experienced teachers, to consider teaching as a calling and to go to India, to the source. Living in Los Angeles I was able to study with some of the most respected
certified Iyengar teachers in the country, including Manouso Manos,
Karin O'Bannon, Lisa Walford, Marla Apt, Chris Stein and Paul Cabanis. I prepared for years to go to India to study with BKS Iyenger, his daughter Geeta and son Prashant at their Institute in Pune in January 2002. India opened my eyes to the depth of the origin of the practice and being with the Iyengars gave meaning to their method and I saw and experienced its benefits first hand.
I became a certified Iyenger teacher in 2003 after passing rigorous assessments and completing the three-year Teacher Training Program at the Iyenger Institute of Los Angeles. I served as Vice President of the Iyengar Yoga Association of Southern California. And I have attended all U.S. Iyengar Yoga National Conventions since I began studying. In 2013 I passed another certification assessment and became a Junior Intermediate 1 teacher in the Iyengar system. I also completed the fifth part of a six-part Iyengar Yoga Therapeutics intensive training series. I expanded my continuing education to retreats with Patricia Walden and with John Schumacher in Miami and Italy.
I love teaching Yoga and am blessed to have found Iyengar Yoga when I did, and each day I get to share what I love with my students! I know that sense of peace, joy and delight from teaching. Through teaching I motivate students to develop their inner strength and to continually renew their dedication to their practice.
